About the event
The Humanities Collective of IISER TVM and Mazhavil invites you to join the students’ discussion on the recently concluded case that was filed in Supreme Court, Supriyo v. Union of India, or more popularly known as the ‘ Marriage Equality ’ case. The highly followed case was filed by different groups– all of whom were seeking the legalization of same-sex marriages under the ambit of the Special Marriage Act. The session titled, ‘Same-sex marriage: the intersection of culture, morals and aspirations’ is scheduled for Saturday, 11th November, 2023 at 6:00 PM; Venue: CDH1, first floor
In this discussion we will like to open with India’s LGBTQ+ community’s struggle for legal recognition and the reading down of Section 377– the British-era law that had previously criminalized same-sex sexual activities. From there we will move onto the slowly growing acceptance of LGBTQ+ community in the post-377 era and the move for legalization of same-sex marriage. We will then discuss the public perceptions of the LGBTQ+ community and how notions of public morality and culture makes such endeavors tricky and finally we will like to talk about the recent Supreme Court verdict on the same. We will conclude the discussion with questions that tend to imagine what lies ahead for India’s LGBTQ+ folks.
We believe that such matters of public interest that concerns human rights must be understood by everyone and healthy discussions are the way forward.
Looking forward to see you all there in large numbers.
