Time & Location
17 Aug 2023, 6:45 pm – 8:15 pm IST
IISER Thiruvananthapuram Campus, Maruthamala P. O, Vithura, Kerala 695551, India
About the event
The discussion aims to delve into the sociopolitical interpretations of the recently released movies Barbie and Oppenheimer. The former movie, although based on the popular doll franchise, delves into deeper questions such as existential crisis, feminism and capitalism, while the latter is a gritty sombre biopic of the creator of nuclear bombs. Since their joint release, these seemingly polar opposites have snowballed into a joint cultural phenomenon.
Abstract:
Everything is not what it seems. Was Barbie really just a pink splattering of girlhood nostalgia or an actual scathing commentary on today's hyper-capitalist society? Was Oppenheimer really a gritty noir biopic of the inventor of nuclear bombs or a whitewashing of the 20th century's greatest atrocity? Why were Barbie and Oppenheimer juxtaposed against each other, and what pushed it to become this pop culture phenomenon? How does gender come into play? Can movies be gendered?
